Over 100 young Jamaicans from communities across Kingston and St Andrew were hosted at the Caribbean Maritime University (CMU) on August 12 for an International Youth Day experience.
Held under the theme Different Communities. One Digital Future, the initiative was spearheaded by the Grace & Staff Community Development Foundation (Grace & Staff), in partnership with CMU and the Ministry of Education, Youth, Skills and Information, to help prepare young Jamaicans for a rapidly evolving digital landscape by exploring technology, innovation and career opportunities.
During an interactive panel discussion about how technology is transforming education, the workplace and everyday life, participants were encouraged to consider the responsible and productive use of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), as well as the skills and adaptability needed for the future of work.
For participant Giovanni Wright, the panel discussion was a highlight of the experience, “The panel provided valuable advice and practical tips that can support our personal and professional development. I would encourage other young people interested in technology to stay curious, ask questions, embrace opportunities to learn and never be afraid to fail, because failure is often an important part of growth.”
Sandrina Davis, CEO of Grace & Staff, said the initiative reflects the Foundation’s commitment to helping young people prepare for Jamaica’s digital future, “Technology continues to change the way we live, learn and work, and it is important that our youth are prepared to participate meaningfully in that transformation. Regardless of the community they come from, they should be able to see themselves as creators, innovators and contributors. Our role is to help provide the exposure, support and opportunities that can make that possible.”
Participants also toured the CMU campus and engaged with simulation technologies, gaining insight into how technology is applied in training and industry.
Participant Marquesha Douglas said the experience reinforced the importance of understanding how technology can be used effectively, “What I liked most was learning about the variety CMU has to offer and touring the campus. Young people should learn as much as possible about AI and the different tools they can use to enhance their careers. AI can make our jobs easier, reduce errors and save time.”
Through its youth and community development programmes, the Grace & Staff Community Development Foundation provides access to education, skills development, mentorship and experiences that support young people’s personal and professional growth.
