You put the lime in the coconut and drink it all up!!! Or you could skip the lime and just go straight to the coconuts. Whichever way you take it, the coconut is a delicious and refreshing fruit that can re-hydrate you better than most energy drinks on a hot day.

When the Spaniards brought coconuts to Jamaica in the 16th century, I doubt they knew what a pervasive part of Jamaican culture it would become. I mean who doesn’t get excited when they see the jelly coconut man coming. And I know that when I smell those coconut bullas that my Granny makes, my mouth just waters.

Whether it’s a young jelly coconut or a mature one, you’re sure to be in for a treat when you eat this delicious fruit. Apart from just being just all round yummy, coconuts are said to have therapeutic properties which can help to alleviate allergy symptoms, soothe eczema or a sore throat, lessen arthritis, improve insulin levels, and boost energy. They have even been linked to preventing and reversing the effects of Alzheimer’s disease as well as reducing the negative consequences associated with heart disease. This is probably why they are such a common ingredient in everyday products like toothpaste, lotion, soap, lip balm and herbal medicines.

But the best coconut products? Those have to be the ones made just for cooking! Because everyone knows that the way to any Jamaican’s heart is definitely through their stomach. It’s no wonder that GraceKennedy Foods has two product lines dedicated to coconuts.

Grace’s traditional coconut line includes coconut milk, coconut milk powder, and coconut cream. These are household favourites in Jamaica. And they have definitely helped my tummy. Once upon a time I had to wait for what felt like forever while my Granny and mother grated coconuts to make rice and peas, coconut curried shrimps and other delectable dishes. Now, with the convenient and easy to use coconut products, mom and Granny can actually sit back and enjoy the delicious meal that they have prepared, because they are not too tired from grating coconut products, and even better- dinner is finished much quicker! That is what you call win-win and yum-yum!

The gourmet line of Grace coconut products includes all natural, healthy coconut flour, coconut sugar, coconut vinegar, coconut milk, coconut chips, and cold pressed virgin coconut oil. If you’ve cooked with coconut products before, chances are you’ve used them in preparing your various rice dishes, soups and desserts. However you may not have heard of some of the other products. Coconut sugar, for example, is a substitute for cane sugar (more commonly known as brown sugar). It retains quite a bit of the nutrients after being processed, including zinc, calcium and potassium. You are probably wondering what the significance of this is. Well, these nutrients are said to slow down the absorption of glucose in the body. This means that it takes much longer for you to run out of energy. If you have ever experienced the crash after a sugar high then you know just how important this is. Longer periods of high energy means higher levels of productivity, and improvements in overall mood as well! Essentially, what coconut sugar provides is a lower fat content, with a higher rate of energy being yielded.

Similarly, coconut oil has a number of health benefits and cosmetic uses. It’s the superfood that keeps on giving with therapeutic effects for brain health and metabolism. And when you’re not using coconut oil to heal you on the inside, you can use it on your skin and hair as it acts as a natural sunscreen, and locks in moisture for soft smooth skin and silky strands. Not to mention- you’ll be smelling like a delicious piña colada everywhere you go! If those aren’t enough reasons to keep some coconut oil around, I recently found out that it’s also a natural mouthwash! Swish around a little coconut oil in your mouth to kill bad breath and bacteria…your dentist and your friends will thank you!

And, if you haven’t tried some of GraceKennedy’s lesser known coconut products such as coconut chips, coconut flour, and coconut vinegar- I urge you to indulge! Not only will the taste captivate you in an instant- but they too have many other benefits that are good for you.

Are you excited about coconuts yet? As you can tell, I am! Yummy in my tummy, silky on my skin, and with health benefits to boot, I’m definitely going bananas over the coconut products from GraceKennedy Foods!
