Watch top Jamaican chefs vie for pride of place and prizes on Grace Kitchens’ ‘Creative Cooking Chef’s Invitational Challenge’.
The show which premiered on Tuesday October 13, 2009 will run for seven weeks on CVM TV. Over the period eight talented chefs will battle in a knock-out competition to be named “Top Chef” and take home a $50,000 cash prize. The first and second runner-up will take home $30,000 and $15,000 respectively. The competition is a presentation of Grace Kitchens in association with the Culinary Federation of Jamaica.
The objective of the Grace Kitchen’s Creative Cooking Chef’s Invitational Challenge is twofold. Firstly, by showcasing the skills of top local chefs, the competition aims to generate interest in the field of culinary arts, highlighting it as a career option for young people. Secondly, it is a vehicle to expose the public to new ideas for using local products and produce in expansively original ways.
Each week two chefs will simultaneously prepare and present an entrée. They must prepare the dish in 45 minutes: 40 minutes for cooking and 5 minutes for plating.
To qualify, recipes must use a minimum of four (4) Grace products and incorporate a range of local produce. Dishes are judged on the following criteria:
The chef with the highest score moves on to the next round. The last two standing chefs face off in the finals. The rules remain the same throughout the competition.
The competing chefs were chosen from around the island and their backgrounds are excellent examples of the diversity of the culinary career path: from personal chefs, to restaurant chefs to five-star hotel chefs.
Throughout the competition, chefs rise to the occasion by devising radical new ways to make use of convenience foods while showing high levels of skill, artistry and creativity.
The ‘Grace Kitchens Creative Cooking Invitational Chef Challenge’ airs at 7:50 pm on Tuesdays and Fridays on CVM TV in 2 parts: Tuesday is the preparation part of the competition and Friday is the Judging and Results segment.
