It’s often said that the way you treat your employees is the way you’ll treat your customers, and that the real measuring of a company’s achievements is chronicled by how their workers feel.

A key way that GraceKennedy demonstrates their integrity is the personal interest that they take in their employees, and one particular demonstration takes the form of a yearly Wellness Day.

The 2015 edition of GraceKennedy’s Wellness Day was much different from the usual. Held at the Corporate Headquarters on Harbour Street, Wellness Day was the product of the Human Resource Department, the 2015 staging of the event encompassing more than just physical health. The main purpose of Wellness Day is to build team members’awareness about ways to bring more energy into their lives by focusing on their health, lifestyle and body, thereby increasing overall productivity and sense of well-being.

Mizan Mitchell, the HR Assistant for GraceKennedy Foods Central as well as Grace Foods International, helped to coordinate this year’s Wellness Day. “Each year, we invite various ‘fitness gurus’ to enlighten staff on how to take care of themselves, but this year was different. We added a financial aspect – so we invited First Global Bank and the National Insurance Scheme to come and talk to the staff.” GraceKennedy takes pride in being comprehensive, especially when it comes to the way they treat their employees.
Therefore, this year’s Wellness Day included kiosks from (5) different companies and individuals that specialized in areas which GraceKennedy deemed it appropriate to edify staff on namely, Kumea’s Hair Perspective, First Global Bank, ITK Weight Management, The National Insurance Scheme and Dr. Freckleton who spoke to the staff about Work-Life Balance. Mizan spoke to the reason behind the wide range of speakers, saying: “When people think about wellness, the first thing that comes to their mind is losing weight. However, we realized that there are other components of wellness, physical wellness, financial wellness and emotional and psychological wellness. We set out to cover every aspect of it, and we did.” Attendees of the event were able to have consultations with the invited speakers at their booths, and there were free body composition tests offered as well.

Speaking to the staff who attended the Wellness Day, it’s obvious that the event was well-received and quite beneficial. The general response was appreciative, given the efforts that went into planning the event, something that Mizan says was “stressful, but well worth it given the response.” I also benefited from the Wellness Day, especially the presentation from Kumea’s Hair Perspective, a Jamaican-made organic hair care brand. There was something for everyone.

It’s safe to say that the GraceKennedy Group’s ideals of honesty, integrity and trust defined this event – not only are they interested in making profits and growing the group, they’re also interested in the individuals who help them to get there. Mizan was optimistic about the continuation of the event, and for good reason, the Grace Foods Central & Grace Foods International Wellness Day 2015 was a success!
