Youth Development

Homework Programme

The Grace and Staff Community Development Foundation functions as a catalyst for change by giving bright, but somewhat disadvantaged youngsters the opportunity to thrive. The GraceKennedy sponsored Learning Institute of Central Kingston (LICK) is just one of three homework centres established by the Grace and Staff Foundation; the other centres are in Majesty Gardens and Barbican, in St. Andrew.

LICK currently assists more than 300 students who are tutored at the GSAT, CXC and SAT level; the organization also functions as a safe harbour for many children who need the influence of positive role models. By serving as mentors, our own GraceKennedy employees help to nurture a strong sense of self and direction for these children. Several LICK students have gone on to pursue college degrees in Jamaica and in the US.

LICK Photo Club

The LICK Photo Club was formed in 2006, initially to provide an extra-curricular activity to high school students, residing in the Central Kingston communities of Southside and environs. It has grown to become a well recognized youth club in the community, providing options for students interested in non traditional careers such as photography and graphic design.

A highlight of the club’s year is the annual photo competition and exhibition. In 2008, club members were invited to exhibit their work at the Institute of Jamaica in Kingston.

Catalyst Programmes

The United Church of Christ group, based in Columbus, Ohio, has been working through the Grace and Staff Community Development homework programme, to help students from mostly inner-city communities to access a tertiary education.

Students enrolled in the programme receive help in several ways. This includes help with school fees, mentorship, and donation of books. But most of all what the programme seeks to do each year is prepare students for tertiary education and help them find scholarships. They are provided with funds to take the SATs, with assistance to fill out application forms, and advice and support in making the transition to life in the United States.

Continuing Education/Remedial Classes

The Foundation has partnered with various institutions to provide continuing education for scores of residents in the Parade Gardens community. Under the programme, persons who did not complete their formal schooling now have an opportunity to attend remedial classes, with some residents completing the High School Equivalency programme.

The Foundation also partners with the HEART Trust NTA to enrol persons interested in learning marketable skills such as cosmetology and barbering.

Youth Summer Employment

Each summer the Foundation helps tertiary and high school students find jobs in
various social agencies and institutions.
